Press Officer

Salford Quays, Manchester

We are looking for an enthusiastic Press Officer to join our Corporate Affairs team.

You will manage our press office line, taking calls from journalists, deciding next steps in terms of response, and managing the call log.

You will draft press releases and work through the approvals process to get them signed off. To do this, you will need to work with teams and people across the business to get the information and sign off you need – and you will work particularly closely with customer service teams, as many enquiries will be in this area. You will also look after our bank of key messages by topic area, ensuring that they are up to date.

You will also be in charge of daily media monitoring, looking out for & collating mentions of TalkTalk, and sending an overview to relevant people across the business.

You will also be involved in briefing our agency on press outreach and will contribute to the drafting of press releases and responses to press enquiries.

However, just as important part of your role will be helping to create comms campaigns, working alongside others in our comms team, working with different parts of the business to mine for stories. TalkTalk has a wealth of untapped nuggets, that can be unearthed to help tell our story in an impactful way. By creating connections with teams across our business, you will be able to suggest stories to the wider comms team and help lead campaigns based off them.

You will think creatively about how to tell our story and have the opportunity to learn and showcase a wide range of business activity, ranging from tech and digital, the future fibre story of Britain, policy issues and customer relations, as well as working on broader corporate activity.

You will have the opportunity to create content for and maintain our website and some of our social media channels.  You will also support with the organisation and execution of wider Corporate Affairs work, for example helping the Press and Communications manager in maintaining the grid of upcoming activity and supporting on Public Affairs activity where required.

What will you need to deliver in this role?

  • Experience as a press officer or dealing with the media

  • Self-starter, who is happy to their own workflow.

  • Interest in digital, telecoms, tech and communications issues

  • Strong written communication skills and aptitude for creating engaging messaging for a variety of internal external stakeholders.

  • Experience dealing with reactive communications activity ideally in a press office setting

  • Previous experience working on social media activity

  • Excellent organisation skills and an ability to manage day-to-day activities and plan ahead 

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • Resilience and the ability to work calmly under pressure

Helpful attributes:

  • Experience working in house, or in an agency

  • Experience working in a regulated industry

  • Experience in crisis communications

  • An interest in the North West or experience working there
